Viridor propose to build a large facility in Portobello (off Sir Harry Lauder Road) so that up to 350,000 tonnes of rubbish each year can be sent to East Lothian via a rail link.İThe proposed building will cover 3,040 square metres. Viridor estimate that 464 lorries per day, every day will deliver rubbish to the facility.
This vast facility, at the site of the old Freightliner terminal, will allow all of Edinburgh, East Lothian and Midlothian’s municipal and commercial rubbish to be brought to Oxwellmains, Dunbar, to be disposed of. This is directly linked to Viridor’s proposal to build a super incinerator on our doorstep.
What can you do?
Members of Portobello Opposes New Garbage Site (PONGS) have heard thatİthe City Of Edinburgh Council’s PlanningİDepartment is seriously considering recommending approval of the plan.
This does not mean however that it will be approved by the Planning Committee. Between now and the planning committee meeting on 30 July 2008 we need to convince the councillors on the planning committee to turn the plan down. Please write to them to express your views.
You can visit the Council's website for details here.
For up to date information, go to PONGS - Portobello Opposes New Garbage Site - to find out how you can help. This website has been set up in early 2008 to provide information related to the highly controversial proposal to build a very large Waste Incinerator at Oxwellmains, near Dunbar, for which planning application is being sought by Viridor.
The website reflects the strongly held views of a large core of local residents that such a proposed development at Oxwellmains is contrary to the stated Scottish Government waste management policy and would constitute a genuine disaster for the local environment, infrastructure and economy.
Make no mistake - if this planning application is granted, the Dunbar coastline and immediate surrounding areas of East Lothian will bear the scars for decades to come. The long term health of local residents will also be at stake. This is a very significant proposal which will affect the area in a major way, almost certainly for the worse in all material respects.
We need the thousands of local residents in East Lothian and Berwickshire who have expressed dismay at the proposals (ie YOU) to write to the decision makers IMMEDIATELY, either by post or email, conveying your complete opposition to what is proposed. This website sets out exactly who you need to write to, where and how. That's all you need to do at this stage. But you need to do it very fast. The clock is ticking as you read this…
